Transforming elderly care using AI and the Internet of Things
Scroll down
By building advanced predictive monitoring and computer vision into a simple product, AI brings peace of mind to families and empowers seniors to live independently
Overview
Japan is experiencing a unique demographic shift, grappling with a rapidly ageing population and a difference in intergenerational living due to changes in culture
These unique challenges have far-reaching economic implications, straining the healthcare system and first responders, reshaping family dynamics and impacting the very fabric of society. Several factors have converged to create this unprecedented situation. A post-war baby boom generation is now reaching old age; as of 2022, nearly 30% of the population was over 65, which will rise to 35% by 2040. Impressive advancements in healthcare have led to increased life expectancy combined with declining birth rates, influenced by urbanisation and shifting family patterns.
The limitations of existing care facilities and a shrinking workforce, which is projected to experience a shortfall of up to 11 million by 2040, further emphasise the urgent need for the government to actively seek innovative ways to support this ageing community, which will grow by a further 5% within the next 15 years.

The PROJECT: specialist reinforcements
Through sophisticated behavioural monitoring algorithms, the mirror can identify and correlate changes in daily routines that may indicate potential health concerns, including early signs of stroke, seizures or Alzheimer’s disease
Xenera recognised the pressing need to address the challenges faced by their client in supporting Japan’s aging population with effective monitoring and care solutions. To deliver on this vision, they recruited KTX, renowned for their expertise in AI and computer vision, to help conceptualise and build a cutting-edge solution. Together, they developed the concept of an IoT smart mirror that utilises AI and computer vision to deliver predictive health monitoring while enhancing security and independence for elderly and vulnerable individuals. Resembling an everyday mirror, the device unobtrusively mounts on a wall or table stand. In its default mode, it displays customisable information like weather, news feeds, health status and even suggested exercises. Beyond its simple appearance, the device has a sophisticated and powerful system with cameras that capture essential data and monitor vital signs like heart rate and blood pressure and seamlessly integrate data from wearables and other smart devices.

THE BUILD
KTX acquired a complete understanding of the vision and bridged the gap between business goals and complex technical requirements
To ensure the success of Xenera’s project, it was crucial to deeply understand their specific vision and unique requirements. Working closely with Xenera and its partners allowed us to bridge the gap between their goals and technical needs, leading to the development of a solution that combines advanced AI and computer vision.
PROJECT REVIEW
This case study exemplifies how technology can offer innovative solutions that not only benefit businesses but also have a positive social impact
There are now 30,000 senior residents in the city of Chiba benefiting from improved health outcomes, strengthened social connections and reduced isolation, along with increased peace of mind for families. Local government and healthcare planners can now better allocate and manage resources across the community.
